isnt that what the devs want to do? make Synergy gameplay experience as close to HL2 as possible?


i would like too see the old features (fists, customizeable playermodels, custom weapons if possible somehow, ...) implemented before the new ones (achievements, autosave system, ...).

One of Synergy OB goals was to remove all those "customization" features to make the game more professional and less confusing for new players. They may not make an appearance in Synergy OB.

how can customization features "confuse" new players? fists: confusing??? (then make it a non-standard weapon, controlable by mappers); custom player models: new players dont even see them!; custom weapons: only used on custom maps.

a HL2-ish coop campain is great, but most non-campain and all custom maps suffer from those restrictions.

While i agree the customization is nice, we had some problems with them in the past. Ones that i have noticed in the community.

CheckButton_1.gif New players tended to not customize until playing a few rounds
CheckButton_1.gif Some new players would have a hard time having to locate the customize area (Yes I'm aware it said "Customize" but it's true.)
CheckButton_1.gif Players would choose storyline character models, zombie models, combine models, and thank god not antlion models. Causing confusion in high-stress combat situations, often causing players to be shooting at themselves. (Once again, i realize that you could see players names by aiming at them, but this is high-stress, enemies everywhere.)
CheckButton_1.gif Animations for some of the models we're messed up
CheckButton_1.gif Some of the weapons were unbalanced (I know, this can be fixed.)

Think back to the posts which involved either crashes from not owning HL2 on the used steam account, and the posts with regards to not being able to play ep2 despite owning ep2, usually because they don't know about mounting games.

I have to agree that custom player models did get a bit crazy when you had players using combine models, even more confusing in the old synergy's Team Deathmatch/Teamplay mode where by it was possible for someone on the combine team to use a rebel model and vice versa.

Version 14 is starting to sound a bit bloated I have to admit, though the stats and achievements should be a great addition. I wonder what sort of stats and achievements we can expect to see. smile.gif

ever heard of variety? afaik, 'fists' is the only old custom weapon which hasnt legal issues. why dont u re-implement it?

Custom models debate - not one I feel overly passionate about, although I do say that I don't want to join a server and discover some of my teamates look like anim characters, so I'm probably a no on that one. As far as I can see, if you just want custom models locally, nothing is stopping you - and I'm pretty sure no synergy servers require consistency. That said, I imagine this process could be made easier for those who wish to do so.

That being said - some way of personalizing your character a bit more (rather than being generic rebel02) would be nice. Accessories? Clothing patches? Colour modifications?

Also, it would be nice if mappers were given the opportunity to make the players look like something other than rebels/citizens when the scenario called for it. I realize that there is a work around using bspzip you could use, but let's be honest it isn't desirable.

Feature creep. If you carry on adding lots of little things that "can't hurt" you eventually end up with a bloated mess that confuses newcomers and, especially with a project like synergy, bares very little resmblence to the original game. Of course, I would quite like to see a few additional weapons added, non-campaign only of course. The difficulty is finding weapons that actually add to the game. Support weapons seem the obvious way to go - something that makes enemies easier to kill so your teammates can finish them off, or need two players to work properly would seem ideal. The only one of the old weapons I'd see back would be the Flare Gun. The MP5 was a waste of space, the Pulse Rifle X horrendously overpowered and the AR was bad at just about everything other than killing headcrabs.

The old Synergy allowed for custom models. I didn't have many problems with it since I really didn't do team-play and deleted non-Citizen models. Anyone that attempted to use a model that I did not have was automatically represented with the default Citizen model on my client. Male_04 if memory serves me. But I had to disable automatic downloads from public servers to keep from being flooded with custom content on my client. The only problem I did see was that Synergy allowed the use of Combine and CPs as player models during coop play. Which was confusing when scanning for targets during the heat of combat. That's why I had deleted them to begin with. Those models were needed for the Team-play features of the old Synergy. Since that's no longer an option. Then those models are just clutter now.

It would not bother one bit if someone wanted their own custom models on their own client. But we all know it wouldn't stop there. Inevitably someone would feel the need to configure their server to push custom models downstream on to my client forcing me to look at their buggy "beta" crap. No thanks. I'm quite content to stick with the standard and already polished Valve models just as they are right now.

Oooh, bspzip. There totally needs to be a tutorial on that with Synergy. XD

However, progressive spawn points would really help out on my map. Especially on this certain train part, but even though I have that worked out, it'd still be cool.

But hey, didn't Half Life 1 have it so you can change the hue of certain parts of your player? (Opens it up) yeah, it's there.

I don't know about the Steam version, but I know the WON version gots it. Speaking of gots, I totally let my dogs own like three cats earlier. Freaking awesome.

But I want that autorestore.

Nope, far from dead. But unfortunately I've been away since April 4th (I think) and haven't been here.
I'm an 8 hour drive from home right now. I don't know when I'll be getting back home.
